A Facelift Can Change the Way You Look and Feel

A facelift is a procedure known as a rhytidectomy, and it is primarily used to make corrections to the lower part of the face. This procedure is designed to remove and lift the excess skin on the face. The results of this are younger-looking skin and fewer wrinkles. You may look many years younger than you did before having this done. If you would like to have other work done, this is a procedure that can be combined with other surgeries as well.
There are several things your surgeon will discuss with you prior to having a facelift procedure. The first thing is your expectations. During your consultation appointment, you will discuss this with your doctor. He will tell you what the expected results are, and you should only choose to have this done if these results match your own expectations. The doctor may also require certain lifestyle changes prior to the procedure. One of these changes is that you may be required to stop taking aspirin. Aspirin is known for thinning the blood and this is something that can cause problems during a procedure. If the blood is too thin, a patient may bleed too much during the surgery. Another common request is that a person must stop smoking before the surgery. This is a general requirement and must usually take place at least one month before having this done.
The doctor you choose will also discuss with you the actual process that will be used during your facelift surgery. Most of the time, the doctor will make an incision by the person's ear. He will then pull the skin up through this incision, removing some of the skin, if necessary, and the remainder of it will be pulled tight. Once this is complete, the doctor will close the incision with stitches or metal clips. You can expect to be given anesthesia prior to the surgery and you should expect the entire procedure to last for at least 2 hours or more. The doctor may also discuss with you the requirements necessary for caring for your incision site after the procedure is done. This is an invasive procedure and it will often leave a person's face swollen, red and irritated. Depending on your age and healing ability, all of this should leave the face within two weeks. These are all things you should know prior to making the decision about getting a facelift. You can weigh your options and decide if this is really what you want and you can go from there.
